2008 Climbing Awards - Details

Postby daveh_cdn » Thu Nov 20, 2008 7:32 pm

Introducing the first annual Climbing Awards.

As a motivational, fun, and exciting event ottawaclimbing.com will be nominating Ottawa-Gatineau climbers for awards. Starting this year, and hopefully repeating every year, ottawaclimbing.com will happily be supporting and congratulating climbers for their accomplishments, dedication, and passion for the activity we love so much.

There are five categories this year:

  • :trophy: Climber of the year
  • :trophy: Send of the year
  • :trophy: Most improved climber
  • :trophy: Most dedicated climber
  • :trophy: Most supportive climber

Of course this is open for all types of climbing. There will be a topic in the Climbing Awards 2008 section for each of these categories. Inside these topics I encourage all of you to nominate as many people as you like. Nominations will be open for approximately two weeks. At the end of that time I will compile the list of nominees into polls where we can all vote for our choice. Nominations will not be anonymous but votes will be anonymous. I will notify nominees by email when the two weeks are over and voting begins. I don't know how long I will keep the voting open for yet.

Don't be discouraged if someone already nominated the person you wanted to. Nominate them again, or just comment on the previous nomination. I want a lot of discussion.

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone on the forum could be nominated in one way or another.

To nominate a climber they must be a member of the forum. Every nomination needs to also include a nice justification explaining why you are nominating them. Not everyone is aware of all of the impressive events that went down this year so please explain.

Please take a little time and nominate / vote. Prizes are still being thought up but there will definitely be a prize for the winner of each category. ;) I know that Leanna and I would be down for donating some cool prizes (money, gifts, services) and if anyone else wants to it'd be much appreciated. :)

If you had an award for “Craziest!!! Mofo Climber” I would nominate Mat for Stump Start in Squamish. I wish I had a pic of that madness. Dare I say, “crazy awesome.”

Nominations are closed. Voting begins!

I have collected all of the nominees from each category. I have edited the first post in each of the respective topics and created a poll so please re-visit each topic and place your vote.

Don't let the other votes in other categories influence your voting. If someone deserves to win all of the categories then they totally should!!

Voting will be open for approximately another two weeks until the winners are announced.

Winners

Postby daveh_cdn » Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:50 am

WINNERS of the first annual Climbing Awards.

Well, voting is closed for the 2008 Climbing Awards! The winners on 2008-12-30 are:

  • :trophy: Climber of the year: Adrian Das
  • :trophy: Send of the year: Le Jete du Canard - Louis Rainville
  • :trophy: Most improved climber: Katerine Martin
  • :trophy: Most dedicated climber: Adrian Das
  • :trophy: Most supportive climber: Dave Heerema

Congratulations to everyone. Graham and I will be publishing a calendar this year. Nothing fancy - just some of the good shots taken this year. I also plan on making more T-shirts in 2009. Winners can probably expect something from this lot.

I'd just like to throw out a big congratulations to everyone who is part of the Ottawa climbing scene regardless of ability, experience or subscription to this forum.
I made so many new friends this year and met so many people who were psyched and excited to improve themselves, push themselves and encourage others to do the same.

As far as winning some sort of recognition from my peers I would just like to say that without my friends all of this would just not be the same.
You've all helped me out more than you can imagine.
Keep on rockin' in the new year :D
